Praise for pilot after landing

PA Auckland Mr Marcus Lee made an emergency landing at Ardmore Aerodrome then telephoned his wife to say he would be late for dinner last evening.

"I though she would be cross,- but then I explained that I had been in a bit of an accident,” Mr Lee said. The Cherokee Arrow, in which he was carrying two passengers, made a belly landing after its nose wheel jammed and all efforts to loosen it failed.

Fire engines and ambulances stood by as the aircraft skidded to a halt in what engineers described as “a copybook

emergency landing.” Mr Lee, a full-time pilot and instructor, was putting into practice for the first time what he has taught in theory to many others.

Both his passengers held commercial pilot’s licences. One, Mr Brett Lucas — also a flying instructor — had “gone along for the ride.” He swapped seats with the co-passenger, Mr David Robb, who was being instructed in instrument flying when they realised there was a nose wheel malfunction.

Nobody was injured in the incident. The plane was slightly damaged.
