Evert struggles

NZPA-Reuter Key Biscayne, Florida The second seed, Chris Evert, needed a third set tiebreak to defeat the eleventh seed, Canadian Helen Kelesi, yesterday and reach the semi-finals of the SUS2.I million (SNZ3.4 million) International Players Championships tennis tournament. Evert struggled through the tough baseline battle that was interrupted by rain during the second set before overcoming Kelesi 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to set up a semi-final against fellow-American Zina Garrison, the fifth seed. Garrison took an error-filled quarter-final 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 from unseeded Jana Novotna, of Czechoslovakia.
