Obituary Mr David Fowler

PA Wellington The Arts Council’s business programme manager, Mr David Fowler, a heart-transplant recipient, died on Saturday. He was aged 52. Mr Fowler received a heart transplant at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, in June, 1987. He had been suffering from ill health associated with his heart condition for several years. Mr Fowler was a prominent figure in the arts and film industry. He joined the National Film Unit in 1954 as a production trainee and

rose through the unit’s ranks jo become its head in 1973. He assisted in the research, scripting and direction of many films for the unit. 11l health forced his early retirement as manager of the unit in 1980 but he maintained an interest in the film industry as a member of the Film Commission. He was appointed manager of the Arts Council’s arts and business programme in January, 1985. Mr Fowler is survived by his wife, Wendy, and three children.
