Package industry faces problem
By PATTRICK SMELLIE in Wellington The New Zealand paperboard packaging industry faces problems similar to those which faced the Whangarei Engineering Company, Ltd. W.E.C.O. went into receivership last week, claiming special treatment for Australian shipbuilders by the Australian Government had killed the industry in New Zealand. Similar treatment for Australian exported packaging paperboard was revealed by the presidentelect of the New Zealand
Paperboard Packaging Institute, Mr Bill Berry. Up to 100 jobs could be lost unless the special treatment given to Australian exporting manufacturers was not addressed, as promised, under the closer economic relations agreement, he said. “Under current policy, although New Zealand cartonboard packaging manufacturers supplying the local market have to pay duty on imported paper from a third country, Australian companies competing in the same market don’t have to,” he said.
