PA < London Australia trounced New Zealand, 3-0, in the final round of pool play at the world women’s squash team championship in the Netherlands yesterday. The deposed world individual champion Susan Devoy suffered her second defeat in a week, but showed her class with a gutsy fightback despite suffering from bronchitis. Devoy, left out of the team to play Scotland because of her illness, struggled back bravely from 2-0 down before succumbing to Liz Irving 9-1, 9-6, 4-9, 7-9, 9-2 in a 52-minute battle. The match ended hopes of a New Zealand win as the No. 2, Joanne Williams, had earlier been beaten 9-L 9-3, 9-2 by Vicki Cardwell, the experienced former world individual champion. The third tie became something of an exhibition match between Donna Newton and Australian fourth-stringer Robyn Lambourne. Both players went for their shots but the Australian ran out the winner 9-2, 9-2, 9-4.
