New swim records

Two new national short course records were set by Canterbury swimmers at the 25m Aqua gymnasium pool recently. Michaela Ross, aged 15, broke the open record for the women’s 200 m breaststroke with a time of 2min 36.995. The old record, of 2min 37.70 had stood since 1980. Joe Ward, of New Brighton, established a new mark of 31.68 s for the junior boys’ 50m breaststroke, beating the old time by more than seventenths of a second. Ward now holds both the long and short-course junior records for the distance. His long-course record, of 32.455, set at the Canterbury Secondary Schools meeting in the Q.E. II pool betters the old mark of 32.635.
