Three unbeaten
First-day upsets were few in the Runaway Holiday Tours Open fours tournament at the Linwood Bowling Club yesterday. However, few survived the day unscathed. Of the 38 teams only three came through with three wins. Of these, none would have been unexpected although there were several others who might well have achieved an unblemished record. All three teams which remained unbeaten were from Christchurch. The most prominent of these was the Spreydon team skipped by Ray Hunt. A home club team, led by Lance Tredinnick, also had three wins as did Brian McGowan’s Papanui four. Others' who would have
been hoping for the ultimate status after the first day, but failed to achieve it, were a number with a draw associated with two wins. The defending champion, Lee Schafer (Redcliffs), was one of these, along with Malcolm McLeod (Cashmere), Colin Lowery (Southbridge) and Vance Watts (Linwood).
Several teams from other centres suffered in the excellent conditions at the Linwood club. John Mears (Springlands, Blenheim), the runner-up in the national singles championships to Sydenham’s Gary Lawson, lost two and won one. Alan Barker from Timaru, had three losses, as did Colin Parker while Alan Jones (Leeston) had two losses and a win.
