Familiar fight

Elmwood and United — familiar sparring partners — face their last fight in the grand final of tile BNZ senior women’s senior inter-club tennis final at Wilding Park today. They have traded shots six times in the last two seasons and will contest the grand final for the second consecutive year today. Elmwood will be headed by Amanda Trail who has been in Auckland preparing for a junior tennis trip to Asia, after the club paid for her journey home. Elmwood has the same team as last year with the exception of Angela Eroding, a late addition to the side after Jillian Lavender, the resident No. 4, moved ’ to Australia. United is wary of her inclusion in the lower ordefc, where it hopes to make an impact.

“Amanda is so strong at No. 1 so we will be relying on our No. 3 and 4,” said Phillippa Lewthwaite, the captain of United. “Angela played at No. 2 in the senior grade last year and she is good, but Rose (Gardiner) has not lost a single for us all season.” Whatever the result, Lewthwaite predicts that it will be close. The United team is also unchanged from last year with Shirley Haig, Lewthwaite and O’Dell filling the first three places respectively and Gardiner taking up a fulltime place at No. 4 this year. The men’s competition is also heating up. It is the final of section play-offs today where the firstround winner, Shirley squares off against Avonhead.
