Papanui bowlers win
A dramatic break-through on the twentieth end 1 enabled Daphne Young (Papanui) and her lead, Dawn Petley, to win the Christchurch Women’s Bowling Centre’s champion of champions pairs title on the Christchurch-Richmond green yesterday. Young and Petley held a tenuous 17-15 lead after 19 ends in the final against Doreen Tupe (Woolston W.M.C.) and her lead, Joyce Evans. Then the Papanui pair scored a five at the next end, and the match was all over. Tupe had earlier eliminated the title-holder, Gwen Carter (Fendalton), in the quarter-finals and triumphed over Jean Foreman (Spreydon) in an outstanding semi-final match. Results:— Quarter-finals: Foreman beat Fran Humphries (Belfast), 18-17; Tupe beat Carter, 27-18; Young beat Irene Lyttle (Shirley), 17-15; Olive Lindsay (Rangiora) beat Daphne Hullah (Christchurch-Richmond), 17-14. Semi-finals: Tupe beat Foreman, 21-18; Young beat Lindsay, 20-9. Final; Young beat Tupe, 22-15.
