Impressive win for Kate’s Myth
p A Palmerston North The top filly, Kate’s Myth, cruised to an impressive victory over the highly-rated Straight Order in the Galaxy Stud Three-Year-Old, a feature race at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting yesterday.
Straight Order was backed into favouritism and his army of supporters would have been happy when he grabbed the lead turning for home. But Kate’s Myth was tracking him, and she gained the upper hand 200 m out, going on to score by 2i/ 2 lengths. These two had it to themselves, with Hunting The Ivory some eight lengths away after losing a lot of ground at the start. So popular were the two favourites in the betting that the quinella paid a mere $1.20. Kate’s Myth shares the lead with Olga’s Pal in the Wrightson Filly of the Year series. She has beaten her rival most times they have met and the final showdown could be in the
Lindauer Stakes on Saturday week, the last of the series. But her trainer, Murray Baker, said yesterday that there was still a possibility that Kate’s Myth would be in Sydney that day contesting the Orlando Classic. Latitude returned to her best form with a fighting win in the $15,000 Greg Rangitikei Cup. Latitude staved off a strong bid from Margarella to win by half a length. A five-year-old mare by War Hawk 11, Latitude has had seven wins from only 15 starts. It was only her second start for the season, the first resulting in a fourth at Awapuni last month. Latitude is trained on the track by Chris McNab and was ridden by Tony Allan.
Soubrette came home strongly for Latitude’s former trainer Margaret Bull to take third, half a length from Margarella. The favourite, Irish Anchor, stopped to fifteenth after sharing the pace to the turn. Kotahi Jim, going out as the favourite, scored a deserved win in the Tom’s Shu Handicap, second leg of the double. The Woodville galloper, trained by Tom Grogan, was always wellplaced by its rider, Larry Cassidy, and after driving through to the lead in the straight was able to hold off Sage by three-quarters of a length. Old Pirate finished a long head back in third place.
