Tempting trial from Hot Oil
By
JEFF SCOTT
While the adage once bitten, twice shy applies to the enigmatic maiden, Hot Oil, punters could do worse than give the gelding one more chance to atone at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday.
The Mark Lobell four-year-old has a problem reproducing his impressive trial form on raceday, with punters sending him out favourite on several occasions last term for no return.
But his performance to win a Junior Drivers heat by five lengths at the Addington trials yesterday, after being parked in the open to the straight, would tempt most discerning punters to consider him again.
Hot Oil’s time for the 2600 m from a stand was 3:29.2, a creditable effort in the strong nor-easterly conditions which kept times on the slow side for the majority of the programme.
Driven by the Ashburton reinsman, John Lemon, Hot Oil, after, going clear on the home
turn, kept up a strong run to the line, the leaders quickening from the 800 m in 59.6 and finishing off with a closing 400 m of 30.3 into the easterly. Hot Oil will be having his 26th career start in the Jayar Trading Mobile Pace on Saturday, but with a last-start fourth to his credit and favoured with the ace barrier draw, the Austin Smith-trained gelding would not surprise by finally delivering the goods.
