Kiwis take opera leads

NZPA London Two New Zealand baritones have won leading roles in new operas being performed in London. Rodney Macann, of Christchurch, has taken centre stage as the Duke of Gloucester in King Lear, and Donald Mclntyre, of Auckland, is play-

ing Prospero in Un re in Ascolto at Covent Garden. Macann says he believes it must be the first time two New Zealanders have won leading roles in new operas being staged at the same time. Both have been rewarded with the roles after a long association with the companies. Mcln-

tyre has been working in London since the early 19605, Macann since the early 70s. The operas have both been written in the past 10 years and performed in Italy, but this is the first time they have been staged in London. Macann says they have received an “excited” reception.
