Greig, Cairns confirm South African trip

NZPA-AAP Sydney A former England captain Tony Greig yesterday confirmed he would be taking part in next month’s tour of South Africa by a team of former test greats. Greig said due to business commitments he could only spend one of the two wfeeks on tour back in his birthplace but was excited about it. “I can’t wait to catch up with old friends, both off and on the cricket field,” Greig said. It has been arranged that an International Wanderers side will play three games against a South African Golden Oldies team as part of the country’s cricket union centenary celebrations. “It will be a multi-racial team of former test captains and

players from all around the world,’! Greig said. “A lot of people have been invited and it should be great to catch up with blokes like Alec Bedser and Farouk Engineer,” he said. “It is not a rebel tour in the slightest, it’s simply part of South Africa’s celebrations. I don’t care if people want to make a hullabaloo about it.” The Australian Cricket Board chairman, Malcom Gray, said he was also invited by the South African Cricket Union, along with the chief executive, David Richards.

“After consultation with the A.C.8., cricket committee and Government, we regretfully 'decided against accepting the invitation,” Mr Gray said. ' One of New Zealand’s

most. popular players, Lance Cairns, has announced he will be going. “Any ban about going there as far as I’m concerned applies only to test players and my playing days, at first-class level are well and truly finished,” he said. “From what I can gather South African cricket is fully integrated, and that’s something they want to try to explain.” Cairns’ trip does not concern the New Zealand Cricket Council, which cannot prevent any Kiwi cricketer from playing in the republic. “We wouldn’t discourage any of our players from going there, because we have no right to stop them from going,” the N.Z.C.C. chairman, Barry Paterson, said yesterday.
