Six riders chosen

The show-jumping group of the New Zealand Horse Society, Canterbury area, has selected a team of six riders to compete at the CanterburySouth Canterbury-North Otago Show, at Waimate and, for those qualified, the Horse of the Year show at Ashburton.

The object was to give recognition and encouragement to riders who have shown the ability, dedication and self-discipline required to produce a horse sufficiently well schooled and fit, to compete successfully. A short list of 10 young riders was named in December and given the opportunity of joining the venture.

The riders have just participated in a short course of show-jumping instructions from Sherly. Douglas, one third of the cost being met by the show-jumping group. At the conclusion of the course the team of six was announced. The riders are: Chris Harris, Rachel King, Leah Meares, Tracey Kovacs, Anna Rainey and Shirley Topp, with the pony rider, Lee Rutherford, as reserve. These team riders will each receive a grant to help with travel expenses to Waimate and Ashburton.

It is intended to select and help young riders this way every year. It is hoped that with riders walking courses

together and with advisers before competitions and the sharing of ideas and methods will be of lasting benefit. The Canterbury area of the New Zealand Horse Society will hold a two-day championship show at the Canterbury A and P show-grounds this week-end.

Among the highlights will be the classic for Novice C grade and A and B grade horses.

The Foxhunter competition will be another popular event for Novice horses, with the final round being held at McLeans Island at Easter.

Another feature on the programme will be the novice and C. grade pony championship. The A and B grade pony championship class will carry the national points prize and the Victor Ludorum event for A and B grade horses. There will be post entries for the junior show hunter class riders to be under 21 years and riding a hack.

The amateur show hunter class for riders over 21 years will also attract post entries.

The novice consolation class will be run for riders not eligible for the championship class.
