Awapuni Special correspondent Palmerston North Infantry came through his semi-final trial for Saturday’s Foster’s Wellington Cup in fine style at Awapuni yesterday morning. The horse has not looked back since his Marton Cup success and trainer, Margaret Bull, is hopeful he will perform well in the Cup. Yesterday Infantry worked on the plough with Darkie San. They ran 1400 m in 1:31.4, the last 600 m in 39.8. David Welsh will ride Infantry in the Cup. Darkie San is a candidate for one of the minor races on the last day. Mr Brooker will have a change of rider in the St Leger on Saturday. Greg Childs, who rode him in the Wellington Stakes, will be at Ellerslie on Saturday and Grant Cooksley will now ride Mr Brooker, besides stablemate and first-day winner, Tap. Mr Brooker worked well yesterday, running 800 m with Bloom in 52.4, the last 600 m in 38.4. Mr Brooker steps up to more ground after running on strongly on the first day. I’m Margaret and Misty Pink were timed over 600 m in 37 and Lagerfeld took 53 for 800 m, the last 600 m in 39. He is in the Wellington Cup after a bold run in the Marton Cup. attention when running 600 min • 37. He has freshened well and will line up in the open sprint at Hawera then, all going well, the Lion Brown Sprint at the Waikato meeting next month. Filey Bay and Trina Bay, both form runners for Trentham on Saturday, ran 800 m strongly in 50, the last 600 m in 37. Trina Bay looked unlucky at New Year.

On the course proper, Myginti, which races at Hawera, worked well with an Imperial Seal maiden over 600 m in 36.4. Myginti shows any amount of promise.

Bright Notes, engaged at Trentham, was timed over 1600 m in 1:53, the last 600 m in 41.

Finn Bear, engaged in the highweight on Cup Day, ran home 1200 m in 1:17, the last 600 m impressively in 37. Gai Gem and Pierre Marcel, both acceptors on the last day, took 1:5.4 for a smart 1000 m, the last 600 m in 37.4.
