Softball success

Canterbury accumulated 174 runs for 49 against in the course of winning the South Island under 14 boys’ softball tournament at Greymouth last week. On only two occasions in its 10 matches was Canterbury taken the full distance. One of those was the game it lost to Southland in the roundrobin. Canterbury more than made up for that solitary loss. It went into its final roundrobin game needing to beat the undefeated Otago by six runs and won in a canter, 264. The same teams met in the final, Canterbury wrapping it up, 17-1, in only five innings. Five Canterbury players were subsequently named in the South Island tournament team. James Williams (Suburbs) was included as the No. 1 pitcher and Troy Morris (Kereru) as the first catcher. Also in the line-up were Leon Nikorima (Burnside) as short-stop, Martin Needham (Woolston-Cardi-nals) as the infield utility and Travis Wilson (Burnside) as first base.
