SPEEDWAY The Kaiapoi driver, Gerald Griffiths, took maximum points from three heats to clinch the Canterbury stockcar championship at the Woodford Glen speedway last Friday.

Griffiths took the lead in the first heat after the early leader, Wayne Wilding, hit the concrete wall. Wilding recovered to take second place from Peter Ross with Ken O’Connor fourth.

The second heat, Griffiths established an early lead and Wilding, Ross and O’Connor were again fighting for the minor placings. Ross eventually was second, from O’Connor after Wilding dropped back with mechanical problems.

Griffiths started the final heat with 40 points. Ross, O’Connor and Wilding were all jut a few behind. Griffiths, however, put the issue beyond doubt with yet another win. Wilding was second and Peter Field third.

The final points tally had Griffiths first with 60 points, Wilding second with 53 and O’Connor and Ross — who finished the last heat fourth and sixth respectively — tied for third place on 52 points. A four lap run-off was held to determine third place. This was won by O’Connor who ensured his placing by spinning Ross twice. Results.—
