Prince Kumai injured

Special correspondent Auckland Prince Kumai, which carried the hopes of South Islanders for an Auckland Cup win, has been forced to miss the big race on Monday due to injury. It is the second time this season his connections have been disappointed on an Auckland campaign. Last spring they failed, only narrowly, to qualify him at Ellerslie for the Melbourne Cup. Prince Kumai ran poorly, and right off character in the Jaguar Cup at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, the first day of the Auckland Cup carnival, when only twelfth. He had an excuse, though, as he suffered an injury during the big 2400 m race. X-rays of a front leg, which had given him some pain, showed a small bone chip broken away from a lower joint. Prince Kumai, which has been stabled at Takanini, will be returned south, as far as Christchurch, as soon as transport can be arranged, to undergo surgery to remove the bone chip. His trainer, Brian Anderton, said from his Wingatui property yesterday that Prince Kumai would be spelled after the operation until it was time for him to be prepared for racing next spring.
