Courier Bay’s dam dies
PA New Plymouth The "Horse of the Year” Courier Bay’s dam, Bay Ruth, has died. A 16-year-old Lionhearted mare, Bay Ruth died while being transported from her owner’s property, at Egmont Village, to the Massey University veterinary clinic, in Palmerston North. She was being taken there by her owner, Geoff White, for further diagnosis after becoming ill. '<An autopsy revealed
Bay Ruth died as a result of a blockage in the bowel. She was carrying a foal by Pompeii Court at the time of her death. Her last foal, a yearling filly by Prince Echo, is to be retained for racing by the Whites. Of the six live foals from Bay Ruth, Courier Bay is, to date, by far the best performed. His record stands at 16 wins and 13 placings from 43 starts for nearly $600,000 in stakes. He has won4he Group
One Wrightson Handicap and Lion Brown Sprint twice, and will attempt, on Monday, to add the Railway Handicap, the only Group One sprint to elude him, to his tally. Last season Bay Ruth shared the Taranaki “Broodmare of the Year” award with Pearl Harbour, dam of Pompeii Pearl, and Gold Flake, the dam of the New Zealand Derby winner, Satisfy. The mare's death came as a sad blow to the White family.
