Avanti furthers consistent record
Special correspondent Greymouth The Rangiora gelding, Avanti, improved on his two seconds at the Westport meeting with an impressive all-the-way win in the Reefton Cup Handicap Pace (3200 m at the Reefton Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. Confidently driven by Mike de Filippi, Avanti shot clear early in the run home and never looked in danger of defeat, with another Westport placegetter, Miss Mischief, storming home to take second from Granada on the finish line. Avanti advanced his earnings to more than $20,000 and has now won three races. Earlier in the day Miss Bella joined Kotare Coral in the running for the $lO,OOO bonus final to be held in Greymouth on Tuesday when she lead all the way in the Francis Mining Handicap Pace (2500 m After going to an early lead and applying the pressure, the three-year-old daughter of Son Of Afella had her rivals gasping at the turn and she set a track record. Miss Bella has won both of her two starts and looks destined for higher honours. In the last event of the day, one which featured five horses trying to qualify for the bonus, all were thwarted by the return to form of good three-year-old Star Kingdom, which stormed past bonus contender, Bestoranam, to record an easy victory. All the other bonus contenders were well beaten.
