Prince’s horse fails dope test
NZPA-AAP London A four-year-old gelding owned by the Prince of Wales has failed a dope test. Traces of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline — all prohibited substances — showed up in tests after Devil’s Elbow won a novices’ hurdle at Worcester on December 5. Devil’s Elbow was the Prince’s first track winner. The four-year-old is the only horse he has in training and is related to Amethea, the first racehorse he owned. Trainer Nick Gaselee confirmed that a Jockey Club investigation officer had been to his yard regarding the positive test. “The test showed that caffeine was present and some feed stuffs have been taken away for analysis,” Gaselee said. The Prince has been informed of the test failure, Gaselee said. A Jockey Club spokesman, David Pipe, said: “Our security department is continuing its investigation but at the moment the source of the prohibited substances is not known. “In the past, these substances have sometimes appeared in contaminated feed, but it is too early to speculate in this case.”
