Tony Fleming

Tony Fleming, who was killed in a sidecar accident at the Wanganui motor-cycle meeting on Tuesday, was one of the best known soccer personalities in Ashburton.

A former Christchurch United national league soccer goal keeper, he was one of the main forces behind soccer being established in Ashburton.

Mr Fleming played for United in 1971 and 1972, helping the side to its first Chatham Cup win in a well remembered three-match final against Mount Wellington in 1972.

He was selected for a New Zealand team for a tour to New Caledonia which did not go ahead. He organised competitive

soccer in Ashburton, starting with half a dozen teams. Now there are more than 600 players including a southern league division two side which Mr Fleming coached for the last two seasons. He was also active in coaching children and in the administration of the game with the soccer association which he helped to form. He took up sidecar racing two years ago at the age of 42.

Mr Fleming was also keenly involved in athletics and often took part in veteran competitions.

A fellow soccer administrator said that Mr Fleming was always very professional and enthusiastic about the game and his loss would be keenly felt.
