Ski plans crumble

PA Wellington A plan for top New Zealand cross-country ski specialists to compete in a spectacular six-day marathon in Europe has collapsed. The five-man team was to leave New Zealand next week but a lack of sponsorship, mainly for airfares, has forced the cancellation of the trip.

The six-day ski marathon will begin on January 27. It was the first time a New Zealand team had been in-

vited to take part. Free accommodation and ski training facilities were offered in France by marathon organiser, Alain Gaimard.

In the marathon, 40 teams of five ski-mountaineers race across-country from the Italian Dolomites to France.

A spokesman for the illfated team, David Bamford, of Wellington, said he was pretty disappointed the New Zealand team had been forced to pull out.
