P.M. delayed sacking
The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, tried to replace Mr Roger Douglas four months before he sacked him.
Correspondence from Mr Lange and speech notes from Mr Douglas show the low point their relationship had reached by late August and early September. These documents are part of the 115-page dossier Mr Douglas tabled at the Cabinet meeting on November 7 after the sacking of
his closest political ally, Mr Richard Prebble, from the Cabinet that week-end.
They show that Mr Lange wanted to prise some of Mr Douglas’s finance portfolio away from him, but Mr Douglas objected vehemently and nothing came of it — then.
