Water conservation

Sir,—May I suggest a simple way of conserving our water supply? Some years ago the writer adopted the expedient of placing two quart jars (two bricks would suffice), in each of the w.c. flushing cisterns of his flats, thereby saving half a gallon each time the w.c. was flushed, which made a worth-while saving in excess water charges. The efficiency of the system was not impaired. Allowing only one flush per person per day would give a saving of 50,000 gallons per 100,000 head of population. The sewage system would also probably benefit from the re-

duced volume to be treated. Perhaps local body chairmen could please take note.—Yours, etc.,
