Toxic wastes
Sir,—Must we wait until our landfill sites start leaking hazardous wastes? Why do we have potential pollution problems in this country? Unless the waste producers are forced to stop, now, there will be major environmental and human difficulties in the not-too-distant future. We do not want to be polluted like Europe, Canada, and the United States. We must insist that the environmental legislation regarding hazardous wastes (now being reviewed) be extremely tough, with expensive consequences for those who ignore it. We know that industry does not self-police; Government "advice” does not work. The public have held seminars, workshops, work-ing-parties and task forces. Scientists have advised us. Still, industries continue to dump wastes. We know the hazards of putting toxic waste in the Heathcote River, or the Estuary, or almost anywhere. Now is the time to stop discussing it, and do something about it, both legislatively and financially. — Yours, etc.,
BRYAN V. GOULSTONE, Secretary, Canterbury Toxins Action Group. December 20, 1988.
