Waiting tells on patients
PA Auckland Two Christchurch men waiting for heart transplants at Green Lane Hospital are starting to feel the strain of delay, says a spokesman for the surgical team, Dr Arthur Coverdale. The men, who have been waiting about three months, are living with their families in flats in hospital grounds. Dr Coverdale said the men, in their late 30s to early 40s, were in stable condition and able to walk around. “We hope that a transplant will be possible fairly soon, because there is a certain amount of tension and anxiety in waiting for an indefinite date,” Dr Coverdale said. “Now that they have made the decision to have the surgery they do not want to have to wait too long.” Both men suffer from a condition which has weakened their heart muscles.
