Whip incident earns suspension

PA New Plymouth Paul Taylor, a New Plymouth jockey, was suspended for two months after pleading guilty to a charge of foul riding in the Green Bottle Wholesale 1400 at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting at New Plymouth on Monday. Taylor, riding Ah Ha, was found to have struck an apprentice jockey, J. Braithwaite, the rider of Simple Simon, with his whip near the finish of the race. After hearing all relevant submissions the judicial committee imposed a suspension commencing after racing today up to and including February 28. In fixing the penalty the committee stated that a charge of foul riding was particularly serious and a lengthy term of suspension was required as a deterrent. The penalty was a black spot on an otherwise brilliant day for the lightweight jockey who rode three winners — Our Blackie, Eager Rose and Mr Tuttle. Darryl Lang of Cambridge also incurred the wrath of the judicial committee, being fined $5OO for giving misleading evidence. The offence was committed when Lang was giving a statement in relation to his late arrival at the course to fulfil an engagement in the first event.
