Mining ‘growth sector’
Mining is predicted to be one of the few growth areas in the New Zealand economy, says the New Zealand Mining and Exploration Association’s executive manager, Ms Robyn Ross. Ms Ross was commenting on the forecast of economic trends by the New Zealand Planning Council. The council’s research reinforced the mining association’s findings that goldmining could generate 7000 jobs, given a neutral policy environment, said Ms Ross.
“Given this authoritative research, it is astonishing the mining industry is still subjected to seemingly arbitrary, costly and ineffective bureaucratic practices,” she said. It was vital New Zealand seized the opportunity to develop wealth, jobs and exports at a time when forecasts such as the Planning Council’s indicated a decline in traditional agricultural exports, said Ms Ross.
