Damages against newspaper

PA Auckland A High Court judge has ordered Wilson and Horton, Ltd, to pay damages and court costs of more than $58,000 in a defamation action brought by the brother of a former member of Parliament.

Mr Roger Arnold Brill sued Wilson and Horton for $lOO,OOO, alleging he was defamed by reports

in the “New Zealand Herald” on June 7 and 8, 1979. Mr Brill, a brother of the former M.P. for Kapiti, Barry Brill, claimed the reports had linked him erroneously with drug-dealing and drug-running. After a hearing in the High Court at Auckland last month a jury awarded $50,000 to Mr Roger Brill.

Mr Justice Thorp had adjourned his decision on whether the amount should be paid. However, after out-of-court discussions a judgment for $50,000 was entered by consent. His Honour ruled yesterday that Wilson and Horton should pay this amount to Mr Brill plus court costs of $8340.
