Bridge reopens

The single-lane Gates of Haast bridge in South Westland reopened about 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday. The bridge was closed when a bus hit a bridge abutment about 4.45 p.m. on Saturday. The impact buckled a main load-carrying member known as a king strut, dropping the bridge about 100 mm along one side. Mr Robin Odams, the district roading engineer with the National Roads Board in Christchurch, said Workscorp engineers inspected the damage on Sunday. A geologist was called in to examine the rock to ensure it was able to support a platform for jacking up a section of the bridge for repairs. A frame was designed and built by Workscorp staff during Monday night. It was transported to the bridge and jacking began on Tuesday. Mr Odams said several members making up the king strut were replaced. Advertisement
