East and West
Sir,—Warren Thomson requested details of the Soviet use of South Africa as a base for Antarctic research. I cannot supply detailed information but presume the main reason is South Africa’s proximity to the Russians’ area of interest. Mr Thomson is incorrect in quoting Wigram as an operational airfield as its prime purpose is as a training unit. No doubt the R.N.Z.A.F. and the United States would use Wigram if the facilities were suitable as it would be a secure area. I note that Dr Bob Leonard is unhappy with N.A.S.A. aircraft using Harewood because its research into the geomagnetic field enables other American Orions to locate submerged submarines. Is he also unhappy that R.N.Z.A.F. Orions locate, identify and track foreign submarines using data on the Earth’s magnetic field? Are our own Orions thus unwelcome in nuclear-free New Zealand? — Yours, etc., M. JOHNSTON. December 12, 1988.
