Travis Swamp

Sir, —As a resident of New Brighton I find the Catchment Board’s approval to drain the Travis Swamp and its comment that flooding “would not be unduly affected by the development proposal” cold comfort. I am not an engineer and only know what I see, which is the Avon River running bank to bank on many occasions, and this during a period of dry winters. One can only wonder what the effect of this drainage and the run-off. from a large residential development will have on our area. The building of a subdivision on a swamp must be questioned. History shows that in other areas where slurry-filled swamps have been built on, subsidence has occurred, causing heartbreak and disruption to the lives of those who have purchased properties. This lovely area should remain untouched. — Yours, etc., JENNIFER LINEHAM. December 4, 1988.
