Mortgage rates
Sir, —I agree with Mr Douglas, “Mortgage rates too high” (December 5). I have a mortgage with the Housing Corporation which is charging 17 per cent. This appears" expensive compared with the average which Mr Douglas considers too high. Surely Mr Douglas is in the position to tell one of the Government enterprises that its finance rates are too high or is this story similar to the one where Mr Douglas considers the workers are asking for too much (4 to 7 per cent), whilst the politicians arej not (9.5 per cent
plus 4 to 8 per cent). If productivity was the guideline for salary increases, most of the members of Parliament would be in line for a pay cut. — Yours, etc., J. W. GLENDENNING. December 5, 1988.
