Rewarding year

Dominic Simons, a 13-year-old pupil of Our Lady Of Assumption School, Hoon Hay, can look back on a most successful sporting year. During the winter he captained the Canterbury 13th grade soccer team at the South Island tournament in Nelson. Last month he won the 100 m title at the Canterbury primary schools’ athletics championships, and last week he took nine wickets for 46 runs while playing for a Canterbury Invitation XI in a primary schools cricket match against South Canterburys. Furthermore, Simons, who will be going to St Bede’s College next year, was also a finalist in the 50m freestyle at the Canterbury primary schools’ swimming championship. It might be some time before Dominic has time to try his hand at the sport at which his grandfather, the late Eric Simons, excelled. Eric Simons was Canterbury’s top billiards player during the 1950 s and 19605, and was a New Zealand titleholder in the sport.
