CAR RACING The Invercargill team of Peter Dickson, James Seaton, Graeme Young and Norm Butler took the Pepsi Interprovincial Super Saloon challenge at Woodford Glen on Saturday night. Invercargill lined up with teams from Nelson and Christchurch to race three 12-lap heats. In the first heat Tony Blanchard (Christchurch) got the jump at the drop of the flag but went wide on the loose track, dropping down a few places. Young headed the field, followed closely by Seaton and lan Askew (Nelson).

But Young spun off the track, allowing Askew through to the lead. Doug Smith and Tony Cardwell stormed through the field to move in to first and second positions. These two drivers cleared away to a good lead with Butler chasing hard in third place. Smith took the chequered flag, but the positions were reversed by the referee, who credited Cardwell with the win.

Smith again got a great start in the second heat and was soon to the lead. Cardwell came through to second and again these two cars cleared away from the rest of the field, Cardwell winning. A good battle went on for third with Seaton coming through ahead of Young. Smith had pole position for the final heat and quickly established a good lead, with Cardwell again slotting into second place. Young held third, with Seaton and Butler tussling for fourth. Cardwell seized the lead from Smith and took the chequered flag, with Young coming in third. The referee’s decision had the first two positions reversed, crediting Smith with the win. Young was excluded from all placings, bringing Seaton into third. These decisions did not affect the final points standings, with Invercargill taking the win on 84 points from Christchurch, 71, and Nelson, 69.

The saloon car feature featured the return of Denis Bolt for the new season. Bolt put on an excellent display of skilled driving to come through the field and take a popular win.
