Namibia

Sir,—lndependence for Namibia after 40 years defiance by South Africa is good news. South African military forces were ruthless in their attacks on the Namibian patriots, pursuing them into Angola, which got Cuban support in the absence of practical help from the United Nations. The fight for Namibian independence has been long because America gets most of the abundant strategic materials of the area. Again, the United States has had to climb down, as in the Cuban missile affair, when it claimed a victory but finished up guaranteeing not to attack Castro in exchange for the withdrawal of missiles which were never demonstrated to be nuclear. Without the accord, Cuba would have been attacked for an official invasion was planned to avenge the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Kennedy was pushed hard, but discretion, or rather abject fear of his own military, won the day. — Yours, etc.,

VARIAN J. WILSON. December 1, 1988.
