Service
Sir, —On Friday with a friend who was looking for shoes and summer clothes we traversed Colombo and adjoining streets calling into a number of shops. It was most disconcerting to find that we were invisible to the apparent shop assistants who gathered in small groups carrying on their animated personal conversations oblivious to our obvious interest. In one shop we had to interrupt a backroom private conversation despite the fact that four people were interestedly looking at the merchandise. In response to our inquiry we got “$2OO, right?” for an answer and a return to the interrupted conversation. Of course, we bought nothing. Imagine our chagrin to learn that the friendly colourful entrepreneurial market in the Square is under threat from these retailers who blame them for their falling sales. The market brings people into the city. Some retailers need to buck up their ideas and dispense service. — Yours, etc., RUTH MERCIER. December 3, 1988.
