Sale of alcohol on marae opposed
PA Wellington The member of Parliament for Northern Maori, Mr Bruce Gregory, has joined those opposed to legalising bars on marae. The suggestion that marae should be allowed to sell liquor was raised by the member of Parliament for Eastern Maori, Mr Peter Tapsell, at a Turangi marae this week. But Mr Gregory yesterday joined the chairman of the Maori Council, Sir Graham Latimer, in oppo-
sition to the idea. “Excessive consumption of alcohol has been one of the curses of many Maori whanau (family), with broken homes and Maori children’s futures destroyed as a result,” Mr Gregory said. “The marae is a symbol of what is best in Maori whanau, hapu (sub-tribal) and tribal life. To provide for legalised bars on the marae would be to destroy one of the pillars of Maori life,” he said.
