Reprieve for section
The threatened Christchurch City Council construction section has been given a reprieve until the planners of next year’s amalgamation of the region’s local bodies examine its viability. The council’s works and traffic committee last eveifeg referred the issue to a transition committee
after considering an independent report on the future of the section. The report, by Peat Marwick Consultants, said the section should remain as it was instead of disbanding or privatising it. Mr Bert Bullen, ing for the company t said disbanding the section
and relying on private companies to do the council’s work would have only short-term advantages.
“While the industry is extremely competitive at the moment, when it (the economy) does improve the private-sector prices will go up,” he said.
