Good fish variety

Warm weather permitting, Canterbury people will enjoy reasonably priced fish and one of the widest varieties available in some years. Fish supplies have been good during the last few weeks with retailers specialing red cod from about $4.99 a kilogram. Tarakihi had been plentiful and selling between $8.50 to $lO a kilogram, gurnard was the same as tarakihi, and sea flounder ranged from $4 a kilogram.

Warehou was retailing at $7 to $9 a kilogram, and the best of the flat fish — brill and turbot were $ll to $l3 a kilogram. Good sized sole fillets were from $12.50 to $l4 a kilogram — $2 to $3 a kilogram cheaper than September’s prices. A local fish retailer said the wide variety of fish was available because export fish firms wre finding it hard to sell fish offshore with New Zealand’s firming dollar.
