Beer giant sponsors rich Aust. sprint
NZPA-AAP Brisbane
A great tradition in Australian racing has been restored with the sponsorship by Carlton and United Breweries of the sAustsso, ooo Fosters Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm next year.
The Queensland Turf Club and CUB will join forces next year to stage the running of the famous 1400 m sprint on June 10.
The race was called The Elders after 1982 when CUB’s parent company Elders-IXL sponsored it. CUB will also sponsor the sAust3oo,ooo Fos-
ter’s Queensland Derby on the same day — an increase of sAustso, ooo prize money on last year.
Despite no increase in stakes money, the Q.T.C. chairman, Sir Edward Williams said the Fosters Stradbroke would remain Australia’s richest open sprint.
The sponsorship announcement continues the Foster’s link with Australian racing.
As well as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, Fosters also sponsors Toowoomba, Caloundra, Gold Coast and Tattersall’s meetings in Queensland.
