Accidents...
Two young Richmond men died when the car they were in hit a building in Nelson on Saturday evening. They were Daniel Edwin Tutbury, aged 18, and Scott Norman Thomson, aged 16. Their car left the road in Vanguard Street and ploughed through the front entrance to Wormaid Safety, near the intersection of Hardy Street about midnight. Both men died at the scene, Sergeant John Price, of Nelson, said. Firemen had to use cutting equipment to free the bodies from the badly damaged vehicle. Mr Peter Oswell, the branch manager of Wormaid Safety, said about $BOOO damage had been caused to building and stock.—PA.
A 29-year-old Shannon farm labourer, Tua Robert Ropoama, died when he was struck by a train just south of the town at 12.02 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Levin police say. The man was sitting in an upright position in the middle of the tracks when he was struck, and is believed to have died instantly. The police confirmed the driver of the Te Rapa bound goods train saw the man moments before the accident, but was unable to stop.—PA.
Divers have recovered the body of a man who was trapped in the cabin of a 13-metre steel fishing trawler which capsized and sank in rough seas off Opotiki on Saturday. Divers found the body of Douglas Roy Burton, aged 45, about 10.30 a.m. yesterday in water about 20m deep. A plane and boat search failed to find him on Saturday evening. Mr Burton’s brother, Joe, managed to get into a liferaft after the boat sank and raised the alarm by letting off flares. The boat sank about 3km offshore in a strong north-westerly. A Whakatane police spokesman said it appeared Mr Burton became trapped in the cabin. The boat was in very rough seas and took a series of large waves. The first wave swamped the boat and a second wave rolled it over.—PA.
