Skyhawk fault investigated
PA New Plymouth Avionics technicians were yesterday trying to establish the cause of a fault which sparked the emergency landing of an R.N.Z.A.F. Skyhawk jet at New Plymouth Airport on Saturday. The aircraft — with two live 226 kg bombs under its wings — landed at the airport after a fire warning light came oni
The pilot, Paul Hughan, shut the engine down as soon as the Skyhawk completed its landing roll. The incident began when the jet was 40km north-east of New Plymouth during a sortie to Waiouru during a bombing exercise. The pilot noticed the engine’s overheating light flashing and decided to land at New Plymouth.
