Hydro versus heritage in Q’land

NZPA-AAP Brisbane A sAustsoo million (S66IM) hydro-electric scheme which would flood part of an area of north Queensland proposed for World Heritage listing would go ahead, Government sources said yesterday. They said the scheme was approved in principle by the state Cabinet yesterday and would go before the Executive Council tomorrow. The 600 megawatt power station, consisting of three dams, two weirs, a pump station and a series of connecting tunnels, is expected to be completed in three years. Sources said no objections were expected from the Federal Government although lOOha of rain forest in the proposed World Heritage area midway between Townsville and Cairns would be submerged. The hydro-electric scheme would be built near the timber town of Ravenshoe and was seen as a contribution to future local employment.
