Fiji plan approved
NZPA-AAP Suva Fiji’s traditional chiefs have approved in principle a proposed new constitution for the country despite an apparent boycott by nine Western chiefs wanting to derail the issue along rival regional lines. The endorsement by the council of about 270 chiefs (bose ni turaga), represents another hurdle crossed by the post-coup interim Government in its bid to restore democracy. Final chiefly approval of the draft is expected in January when a special meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs is scheduled.
The meeting also approved a Government plan to reduce the Great Council’s numbers from 154 to 56.
