Obituary Sir John Llewellyn

Sir John (Jack) Llewellyn, a former vicechancellor and rector of the University of Canterbury, died in England earlier this month, aged 73.

Sir John was vice-chan-cellor from 1956 to 1961. He led the university ably through a period of growth and change as it moved from being part of the University of New Zealand to becoming the University of Canterbury.

Student numbers increased and big building development occurred during Sir John’s time in the position. Earlier, Sir John had been professor of chemistry at University College, Auckland, from 1947 to 1955 From 1961 to 1966, Sir John was chairman of the new University Grants Committee. He was praised for the way in which he led reforms during that time. He also had a period as

chairman of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. Sir John returned to England in 1966, and was chairman of the British Council from 1972 to 1980. Again, he was praised for the enthusiasm and vision he brought to his position. He is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter.
