Islands newspaper folds
PA Auckland The South Aucklandbased Pacific Islands community newspaper, “Pacific Press,” has folded.
The fortnightly paper, covering news from six Pacific Island communities and news from the islands, lasted only two months.
Its publisher, Mr Henry Gosling, who mortgaged his house to finance the venture, said it had closed for financial reasons. After a month “Pacific Press” changed from being sold for $1 in dairies in south, west and central Auckland to a free paper distributed through Pacific Island churches. Mr Gosling, a Fiji-born
former employee of the “Manukau Courier” and one-time manager of the “Fiji Sun,” said at the time of the paper’s launch the city’s 90,000-member Pacific Island communities were an untapped market.
A similar publication, “Mana,” was set up in 1977 and lasted more than a year.
