SURF LIFESAVING Upset results in the surf boat sections were features of the DB Draught Harbour race for surf lifesaving craft at the week-end. The fancied junior crew from the host North Beach club, which had won both the earlier races in the open water series, struck problems at the turn and faded to third, with New Brighton a fine winner from South Brighton.

And North Beach A and South Brighton were both disqualified in the open section for cutting one of the marker posts. There was a double setback for South Brighton, which struck a reef, but without causing too much major damage.

The national surf ski champion, Geoff Walker (Waimairi), also came to grief at the start, when his paddle snapped. He got afresh paddle, and was offered a restart, a lonely 3min behind Richard Boyle (Taylor’s Mistake) and 2min behind the boats. But for all that he had a time trial; Walker won the ski section by 19s from Boyle, who had won the previous two races. Again, Eugene Gage (Waimairi) was an easy winner of the junior ski, though for once the doubleskis went faster. Other regular winners to improve their records were Jo Stevens (Waimairi women’s ski) and South Brighton (junior and open canoe). The closest finish was in the junior double-ski, where Craig Stevens and Jonathon Harris (Waimairi) edged out Waikuku’s Raymond Cooper and Brian Rhodes by a mere half-length. Results:— OPEN Surf ski.—Geoff Walker (Waimairi), 41:40, 1; Richard Boyle (Taylor’s Mistake), 41:59, 2; Richard Phillips (Spencer Park), 44:20, 3. CRICKET The Christchurch Suburban senior representative cricket team has wrested the Minor Associations Trophy from South Canterbury in a twoday match at Knottingly Park, Waimate. Christchurch Suburban was set a second innings target of 111 runs to win after a South Canterbury declaration and achieved that comfortably with six wickets in hand. Murray Emmerson was the main contributor with an unbeaten half-century. For Christchurch Suburban, Steve Booth had a fine allround game with match figures of six wickets for 82 runs and innings of 58 not out and 18 not out. In its first innings, South Canterbury was actually 90 for nine but the last pair almost doubled the score, putting on 71 runs. Christchurch Suburban’s lan Cartwright took four catches in the innings, all at silly midon. Scores: South Canterbury, 161 (B. Carlaw 51 n. 0., J. Davies 44; C. Louis 3/16, C. Courtis 3/35)

WATER SKI ING Disorganised starting from most teams in the opening day of the Canterbury Waterski Racing Club made for some entertainment but held up races at Duvauchelles last week-end. Although most skiers raced without conviction, some good lap times were recorded. Knee board races proved disastrous as drivers attempted to pull their passengers at speeds beyond competitors’ abilities.

Sunday’s racing was called off because of high winds. Sub-juniors: C. Rogers 1, J. Aitchison 2. Juniors: J. Dick 1, T. Rogers 2, S. Coppelstone 3. Men’s B: J. Dick 1, M. Alexander 2, M. Dickie 3. JET BOATING John Roberts, in his C class entry won this year’s Stuart Blanchard Memorial Cup jet boating race up the Waimakariri River at the week-end. Roberts had a very fast start to the jet boating season before blowing his motor up two months ago. Saturday’s race gave him the chance to prove he was still quick. Another C class boat, that of Peter Muff, of Christchurch, was second overall. The favourite for the race, Ken MacDonald, suffered jet unit problems on the upstream leg of the race but was able to cure the ailment and produced a blistering downstream time smin faster than any other machine. His overall time, however, was nowhere near in contention for a placing. Murray. Thomas scored his first A class win of the season, followed by Johnny Taylor with MacDonald third.

In B class, the Taumaranui entry of Darryl Isaac posted a fast time for first place, followed by Don Yaxley and Bruce Thompson. Thompson managed well for his third place after running his boat aground. Roberts took the C class title as well as the Memorial Cup, shutting off Peter Muff and Tony Mac Kay. The D class favourite, Philip Kiesanowski, was beaten on the upstream leg by North Island’s Lindsay Hay but the unfamiliar Waimakariri was too much for Hay on the quick downstream leg and he ran aground. Kiesanowski thus gained his fifth win of the season. Christchurch’s E class entry of Alan Bull at last managed a clean run for a win in this section. The restricted class favourite, Warren Walker, pushed his 308 cu in Holden engine too hard and it blew 13min from the start. John Harrison, who had been contesting the lead all season, comfortably won from Malcolm Jenkins. Results: — A class: M. Thomas 1, J. Taylor 2, K. MacDonald 3, time Ihr 16min 345. B class: D.
