Cafe may need veranda

The owners of a Lyttelton restaurant, the Volcano Cafe, may be forced to erect a veranda on their building to comply with a Lyttelton borough Council by-law. One of the owners, Mr Gerard Smyth, told last evening’s Borough Council meeting that a veranda was not in keeping with the original design of the building. The only place a veranda could be placed was across the front windows. Mr Smyth said a feature of the restaurant was the unspoilt view from the windows. Cr Mahony May said verandas had been part of London Street for a long time and were part of the character of the street. Allowing the cafe to remain without a veranda could set a precedent. Cr Euan Godfrey said it was up to the owners to show why it was not possible or practical to comply with the by-law. It was recommended that the matter be held over until an independent engineer had looked into the feasibility of erecting a veranda on the building.
